Problem B. 3966. (January 2007)

B. 3966. In the chess tournament of a school, everyone played everyone else exactly once. Every player gained the same number of points playing against girls as playing against boys. Prove that the number of the participants is a perfect square. (1 point is due for winning, 0,5 for a draw, and 0 for losing.)

(5 pont)

Megoldás: Legyen a lányok száma L, a fiúké F. Jelölje továbbá \ellfd a lányok és fiúk között lezajlott LF játék közül rendre azok számát, amelyek női győzelemmel, férfi győzelemmel, illetve döntetlennel végződtek. Mivel minden mérkőzésen összesen 1 pontot osztanak ki, LF=\ell+f+d. A lányok egymás között L\choose 2 játékot játszottak, tehát a fiúk ellen is ennyi pontot szereztek összesen, vagyis {L\choose 2}=\ell+\frac{d}{2}. Ugyanilyen alapon {F\choose 2}=f+\frac{d}{2}. A három egyenlőséget összevetve kapjuk, hogy

{L\choose 2}+{F\choose 2}=LF,

ahonnan L(L-1)+F(F-1)=2LF, vagyis L+F=L2-2LF+F2=(L-F)2. A résztvevők száma, L+F tehát valóban négyzetszám.
