1. megoldás: Nézzük az \(\displaystyle (a\therefore b)\therefore c\) és az \(\displaystyle a\therefore (b\therefore c)\) kifejezéseket. A művelet definíciója szerint ezek így írhatók:
\(\displaystyle (a\therefore b)\therefore c=[(a-2)(b-2)-2]\cdot(c-2)=\)
\(\displaystyle =[ab-2a-2b+2](c-2)=abc-2ac-2bc+2c-2ab+4a+4b-4;\)
\(\displaystyle a\therefore (b\therefore c)=(a-2)\cdot[(b-2)(c-2)-2]=\)
\(\displaystyle =(a-2)[bc-2b-2c+2]=abc-2ac-2bc+4c-2ab+2a+4b-4.\)
Látható, hogy a két kifejezés nem azonos, csak \(\displaystyle a=c\) esetén igaz az egyenlőség. Vagyis a \(\displaystyle \therefore\) műveletet nem asszociatív.
2. megoldás: Ha találunk olyan \(\displaystyle a\), \(\displaystyle b\), \(\displaystyle c\) számhármast, melyre nem teljesül, hogy \(\displaystyle (a\therefore b)\therefore c=a\therefore (b\therefore c)\), akkor a művelet nem asszociatív.
Tekintsük az \(\displaystyle a=1\), \(\displaystyle b=2\), \(\displaystyle c=3\) esetet:
\(\displaystyle (1\therefore 2)\therefore 3=((1-2)(2-2))\therefore 3=0\therefore 3=(0-2)(3-2)=-2,\)
\(\displaystyle 1\therefore (2\therefore 3)=1\therefore ((2-2)(3-2))=1\therefore 0=(1-2)(0-2)=2.\)
Mivel \(\displaystyle -2\neq2\), ezért a művelet nem asszociatív.
