Megoldás:

Legyen az asztal sugara r, a terítő oldala pedig 2a. Tudjuk, hogy 8a=2r\pi, ebből a=0,25r\pi<r.

A zöld háromszögből \varphi=\hbox{\rm arccos}{a\over r}=\hbox{\rm arccos}{\pi\over4}. A lefedett terület 8 zöld háromszögből és négy piros körcikkből áll. Ezek területe együtt:

T_{lefedett}=8\cdot{a\sqrt{r^2-a^2}\over2}+r^2\pi\cdot{2\pi-8\varphi\over2\pi}=r^2\pi\sqrt{1-0,0625\pi^2}+r^2\pi\cdot{2\pi-8\phi\over2\pi}.

Az asztallap területe Ta=r2\pi, és így a keresett arány:

{T\over T_a}\approx0,7692.

Tehát az asztallap területének kb. 77%-át takarja a terítő.
