Problem C. 833. (December 2005)

C. 833. The base edges and the height of a square-based right pyramid are all 40 cm long. We want to connect one vertex of the base to the opposite vertex of the base with a line drawn on the lateral faces. What is the length of the shortest path?

Sorry, the solution is available only in Hungarian. Google translation

Megoldás: A gúla oldaléle \sqrt{40^2+(20\sqrt2)^2}=\sqrt{20\sqrt6}. Ha kiterítjük (elég csak az alaplapot és két szomszédos oldallapot), akkor a palástra berajzolható a legrövidebb út (az ábrán zölddel húzott vonal).

Az oldallapokra felírva a cosinus-tételt:

402=2.202.6-2.202.6.cos \alpha,

amiből cos \alpha=2/3.

A két oldallap együtt egy deltoidot alkot, melynek területét kétféleképpen felírva ( a zöld szakasz hossza l):

2\cdot(20\sqrt6)^2\cdot\sin\alpha\cdot{1\over2}=20\sqrt6\cdot l\cdot{1\over2},

amiből \sin\alpha=\sqrt{1-4/9} felhasználásával

l={80\sqrt5\over\sqrt6}\approx73,03 \hbox{~(cm).}
