P. 4311. Consider a classroom at a temperature of 25 oC in which the air pressure is the normal atmospheric pressure. Estimate the distance (in nm) between a) two nearby Oxygen molecules; b) two nearby Nitrogen molecules.

Megoldás. A levegőben található részecskék kb. 78%-a nitrogénmolekula, 21%-a oxigénmolekula, a maradék 1%-ot pedig vízgőz és egyéb gázok alkotják. Az állapotegyenlet szerint tehát egy nitrogén-, illetve egy oxigénmolekulára jutó átlagos térfogat (azaz az adott gáz részecskeszámsűrűségének reciproka):

\(\displaystyle v_{N_2}=\left( 0,\!78 \frac{p_0}{kT}\right)^{-1},\quad v_{O_2}=\left( 0,\!21 \frac{p_0}{kT}\right)^{-1}.\)

Két-két oxigén, illetve nitrogénmolekula közötti átlagos távolság ennek a térfogatnak a köbgyökeként számítható, értékükre oxigén esetében kb. \(\displaystyle 6\cdot 10^{-9}\) m, nitrogén esetén pedig \(\displaystyle 4\cdot 10^{-9}\) m adódik.
