Megoldás. Számozzuk meg a sakktábla sorait alulról fölfelé haladva 1-től 8-ig. Ha egy gyalog páratlan sorszámú mezőn foglal helyet, akkor minden egyes ugrása után páratlan sorszámú sorba kerül, a páros sorszámú sorokban álló gyalogok pedig végig páros sorszámú sorokban maradnak. Mivel a baloldali helyzetben 6 gyalog helyezkedik el páratlan sorszámú mezőn, a jobboldali helyzetben pedig csak 3, a gyalogokat nem lehet a megengedett módon az egyik helyzetből a másikba eljuttatni.
