B. 5198. I have a tortoise, a cat and a dog. If the cat is standing on the floor and I place the tortoise on the table, the head of the tortoise will be 70 cm above the head of the cat. If the dog is standing on the floor and I place the cat on the table, the head of the cat will be 80 cm above the head of the dog. Finally, if the tortoise is standing on the floor and I place the dog on the table, the head of the dog will be 120 cm above the head of the tortoise. How tall is the table?

Megoldás. Jelölje az asztal magasságát \(\displaystyle a\), míg a földre állított teknős, macska, ill. kutya magasságát pedig \(\displaystyle t,m\), ill. \(\displaystyle k\) (egyaránt cm-ben mérve). Ekkor a feladat szövege alapján felírhatjuk a következő egyenleteket:

\(\displaystyle a + t = m + 70,\)

\(\displaystyle a + m = k + 80,\)

\(\displaystyle a + k = t + 120.\)

A három egyenletet összeadva: \(\displaystyle 3a + t + m + k = m + k +t + 270\), azaz \(\displaystyle 3a=270\), tehát \(\displaystyle a = 90\). Az asztal 90 cm magas.

Megjegyzések 1. A fenti gondolatmenet egyenletek nélkül is elmondható. Képzeletben tegyünk három egyforma asztalt egymás fölé. A földszintre és a legfelső szintre (,,3. emeletre'') állítsunk egy-egy teknőst, az 1. emeletre egy kutyát, a 2. emeletre pedig egy macskát. Ekkor a fenti teknős feje éppen \(\displaystyle 70 + 80 + 120 = 270\) cm-rel van magasabban a lenti teknős fejénél. Másrészt viszont éppen 3 asztalnyival került feljebb, tehát egy asztal magassága \(\displaystyle 270/3 = 90\) cm kell legyen.

2. Az állatok magassága nem állapítható meg egyértelműen a feladat adataiból. A teknős bármilyen \(\displaystyle h\) (pozitív) magasságú lehet, ha a macska \(\displaystyle h + 20\), míg a kutya \(\displaystyle h+30\) magasságú (cm-ben mérve).
