Megoldás. Osszuk fel a téglalapot oldalaival párhuzamos egyenesekkel 9 egybevágó kisebb téglalapra, melyek oldalai \(\displaystyle \frac53\) és \(\displaystyle \frac83\) cm. A nagy téglalapban elhelyezett 10 pont közül, a skatulya elv alapján, 2 pontnak ugyanabba a kis téglalapba kell esnie. Ennek a két pontnak a távolsága legfeljebb a kis téglalap átlója lehet:
\(\displaystyle d≤\sqrt{\left(\frac53\right)^2+\left(\frac83\right)^2}=\frac{\sqrt{89}}{3}<\frac{\sqrt{90}}{3}=\sqrt{10}.\)
Ezzel beláttuk, hogy a 10 pont közül van két olyan pont, melyek távolsága kisebb, mint \(\displaystyle \sqrt{10}\).
