Problem K. 125. (March 2007)

K. 125. Sebastian and Vincent were building towers out of wooden building blocks. They both used identical prisms of square base. Sebastian laid the blocks on each other along their faces of smaller area, while Vincent laid them on each other along their faces of larger area. Sebastian's tower of four blocks turned out to have the same height as Vincent's tower of six blocks. Find the height of the towers, given that the sum of their base areas is 160 cm2.

Megoldás: Legyen a hasáb négyzet alapjának oldala a, a hasáb magasságának hossza b.

Ha a<b, akkor a2<ab, tehát a hasáb alapjának területe kisebb, mint a hasáb oldallapjának területe. Így a kisebb területű lapoknál négy hasábot egymásra rakva a kialakuló alakzat magassága 4b, a nagyobb területű oldallapoknál hat hasábot egymásra rakva a kialakuló alakzat magassága 6a.

Így a kisebb területű lapoknál négy hasábot egymásra rakva a kialakuló alakzat magassága 4a, a nagyobb területű lapoknál hat hasábot egymásra rakva a kialakuló alakzat magassága 6b.

A most kapott egyenletrendszer a2+ab=160, és 4a=6b. Az egyenletrendszer megoldása a=\sqrt{96}=4\sqrt{6}, b=\frac{8\sqrt{6}}{3}, s ekkor a tornyok magassága 16\sqrt{6} cm.
