Problem P. 4882. (November 2016)

P. 4882. In a nuclear reactor the energy of the emerging fast neutrons during the fission of uranium is in the order of MeV. In order to use these neutrons to split more atoms they have to be slowed down to the level of the so called ``thermal energy'' when their speed is just about 2.2 km/s.

The slowing process of neutrons can be done with the nuclides of light elements (for example the deuterium in heavy water can be used) such that the nuclides of the light element (deuterons) collide totally elastically with the neutrons.

\(\displaystyle a)\) Approximately after how many collisions will a fast neutron slow down to the thermal energy? (It can be assumed that the initial kinetic energy of the deuterons before the collisions is negligible, and the collisions are head-on.)

\(\displaystyle b)\) What is the order of the kinetic energy of the thermal neutrons and what is their ``temperature''?

Megoldás. \(\displaystyle a)\) A deuteron tömege a neutron tömegének kb. 2-szerese. A centrális, rugalmas ütközésnél a neutron sebessége harmadára, a mozgási energiája pedig kilencedrészére csökken. A termikus neutronok mozgási energiája

\(\displaystyle \frac12 mv^2=\frac12\cdot (1{,}7\cdot 10^{-27}~{\rm kg}) \cdot (2200\,\rm m/s)^2\approx 4{,}1\cdot 10^{-21}~{\rm J}=0{,}025~{\rm eV}.\)

Az ütközések számára az

\(\displaystyle 1~ {\rm MeV}\cdot \left(\frac{1}{9}\right)^N=0{,}025~{\rm eV}\)

egyenlet alapján adhatunk becslést:

\(\displaystyle N\approx \frac{\log 10^6-\log 0{,}025}{\log 9}\approx 8. \)

\(\displaystyle b)\) A \(\displaystyle T\) hőmérsékleten hőmérsékleti egyensúlyba kerülő neutronok mozgási energiája nagyságrendileg \(\displaystyle kT\) (ahol \(\displaystyle k\) a Boltzmann- állandó. Ezek szerint a lelassított neutronok ,,hőmérséklete''

\(\displaystyle T=\frac{4\cdot10^{-21}~\rm J}{1{,}38\cdot10^{-23}~\rm J/K}\approx 300~\rm K,\)

vagyis kb. a szobahőmérséklettel egyezik meg. (Az atomerőművekben a ,,moderátorközeg'' hőmérséklete kb. kétszerese a kelvin skálán mért szobahőmérsékletnek, de ekkora eltérés még összefér a fenti, nagyságrendi becsléssel.)
