Problem P. 5736. (May 2026)

P. 5736. A research spacecraft of the small green Titan-eating creatures has discovered a spherical asteroid with the following properties:

– it has no atmosphere,
– it always keeps the same face towards its star,
– the solar constant at the asteroid's surface is equal to that on Earth, \(\displaystyle 1360~\mathrm{W}/\mathrm{m}^2\),
– the absorption coefficient of its surface is \(\displaystyle 0.5\).

a) Determine the temperature of the asteroid, assuming that, due to the good thermal conductivity of titanium, the temperature is uniform throughout the asteroid.

b) The small green Titan-eating creatures began surface mining the material of the asteroid over one quarter of its surface. The ``worked'' area may be regarded as a perfectly black body. How does the temperature of the asteroid change depending on whether the mine is located on the dark side or on the illuminated side of the asteroid?

(It may be assumed that, in the case of the illuminated side, the worked area also covers one half of the illuminated hemisphere, when projected perpendicular to the direction of the incoming radiation.)

\(\displaystyle aR^2\pi I=4eR^2\pi\sigma T^4,\)

ahol \(\displaystyle R\) a bolygó sugara, \(\displaystyle I=1360\,\mathrm{W/m^2}\) a napállandó, \(\displaystyle a=e=0{,}5\) a bolygó abszorbciós és emissziós állandója, \(\displaystyle \sigma=5{,}67\cdot 10^{-8}\,Wm^{-2}K^{-4}\) pedig a Stefan–Boltzmann-állandó. Ebből

\(\displaystyle T=\sqrt[4]{\frac{aI}{4e\sigma}}=\sqrt[4]{\frac{I}{4\sigma}}\approx 278\,\mathrm{K}\approx 5\,^\circ\mathrm{C}.\)

\(\displaystyle aR^2\pi I=(3e+e')R^2\pi\sigma T_1^4,\)

amiből az ilyenkor kialakuló egyensúlyi hőmérséklet:

\(\displaystyle T_1=\sqrt[4]{\frac{aI}{(3e+e')\sigma}}=\sqrt[4]{\frac{I}{5\sigma}}=\sqrt[4]{\frac{4}{5}}T\approx 263\,\mathrm{K}\approx -10\,^\circ\mathrm{C}.\)

A második (napos) esetben pedig:

\(\displaystyle \frac{a+a'}{2}R^2\pi I=(3e+e')R^2\pi\sigma T_2^4,\)

amiből az ilyenkor kialakuló egyensúlyi hőmérséklet:

\(\displaystyle T_2=\sqrt[4]{\frac{\frac{a+a'}{2}I}{(3e+e')\sigma}}=\sqrt[4]{\frac{3I}{10\sigma}}=\sqrt[4]{\frac{6}{5}}T\approx 291\,\mathrm{K}\approx 18\,^\circ\mathrm{C}.\)
