B. 4301. The difference of the cubes of two consecutive positive integers is n2, where n>0. Prove that n is the sum of two perfect squares.

Megoldás. Tegyük fel, hogy \(\displaystyle n^2=(m+1)^3-m^3=3m^2+3m+1\), ahol \(\displaystyle m\) és \(\displaystyle n\) is pozitív egész szám. A másodfokú egyenletet \(\displaystyle m\)-re megoldva

\(\displaystyle m=\frac{-3+\sqrt{9-12(1-n^2)}}{6},\)

vagyis \(\displaystyle 12n^2-3=3(2n-1)(2n+1)\) négyzetszám. Minthogy \(\displaystyle 2n-1\) és \(\displaystyle 2n+1\) egymáshoz relatív prímek, ez csak úgy lehetséges, ha \(\displaystyle 2n-1=a^2\), \(\displaystyle 2n+1=3b^2\), vagy pedig \(\displaystyle 2n-1=3a^2\), \(\displaystyle 2n+1=b^2\) teljesül alkalmas \(\displaystyle a,b\) pozitív egész számokkal. A második eset nem jöhet szóba, hiszen akkor a \(\displaystyle b^2\) szám 3-mal osztva 2 maradékot adna. Ezért \(\displaystyle 2n-1=a^2\), vagyis

\(\displaystyle n=\left(\frac{a-1}{2}\right)^2+\left(\frac{a+1}{2}\right)^2.\)

Lévén \(\displaystyle a\) páratlan szám, \(\displaystyle n\) valóban két négyzetszám összege.
